Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 in which he liked playing numerous card games when he was young. He discovered himself becoming very competitive in the above-mentioned card games as he was playing his father. After finishing secondary school, Howard made a decision to put college on hold for a bit and moved away to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While participating in chess, he was brought in to a poker game going on in the rear of the room. Howard’s first two years were rough as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He earned some additional cash by becoming an assistant for the poker players. He believed he could improve his game by analyzing his life outside of poker. He made an effort to acquire more rest and focus more on poker.

The real advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the greatest gamblers would often challenge one another. Howard had access into several of the best minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would hone his cunning thinking skills. He applied these strategic ideas to the game of NL hold’em.

Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke master the game of poker. Annie was a superb student of poker as she would consistently be asking questions about how to make the proper choice. Howard Lederer told Annie to move out to Vegas and compete in the World Series of Poker tournaments. Annie is one of the strongest women players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in Nineteen Ninety Three and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the WPT gained popularity, Howard made the decision to participate in more tournaments.
